New AirTag to be findable from longer range with new ultrawide-band chip
Apple’s next AirTag, expected in 2025, will feature a new ultrawide-band chip for a longer range. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reports that the Precision Finding range could triple compared to the current model.
In his Power On newsletter, Gurman revealed that the new AirTag will use an ultrawide-band chip similar to the one in the iPhone 15. This upgrade will make it easier to find items from a longer distance.
Currently, AirTag’s Precision Finding works within 10 to 30 meters. With the new chip, the range should increase significantly.
Earlier this year, Gurman reported that Apple had begun trial manufacturing runs for the new AirTag in Asia. He also mentioned that Apple retail stores were still stocked with the original AirTag, which has delayed the release of the new version.
Launched in 2021, AirTags help users track their belongings using Bluetooth and Apple’s Find My network. You can attach them to items like keys or bags and locate them through the Find My app on your Apple devices.
